New Laptops - Which Laptop is Right For Me
Well I've finally decided to purchase a new laptop. Now the big question is, which one is right for me? There are so many laptop models for sale, I have no idea where to start. There are some basic questions you can ask yourself about the use of the laptops that will greatly narrow down the choice and steer you in the right direction.
Answer the following questions? How much can you spend? Give yourself a range here something like $500 - $800 as an example. How much time will you be travelling with the laptop? Are you a frequent flyer who will need to have the laptop with you at all times or just like the idea of a laptop so you can sit on the couch at home and surf the web or play games? Finally, what kind of performance do you require from the laptop? Will you be running high performance applications, or extreme gaming or someone who likes to web surf and visit social networking sites?
Your answer to these questions will play an important part in deciding what kind of new laptop you need to choose from.
What Makes My Computer Tick
- Computer Parts and Accessories - Yesterday and Today
All computers, both laptops and desktops, have the same basic components, processor, memory, hard drive, and i/o. This has not changed since micro computers were first introduced to the market in the early...
Here Are 3 Types of Laptops to Consider
There are 3 main types of laptops to consider in your purchase. The first one has all the power of a desktop, but gives you the portability of a laptop. These units are fairly heavy ranging 8 to 12 pounds and higher in weight. The display sizes generally run 17" and higher. They have the fastest processors, large amounts of RAM and Hard Disk storage, and excellent graphics. They are meant for high end computing for the serious gamer or someone who works a lot with Multi Media packages. Instead of having to sit at a specific desk, you can sit on your sofa, bed or anywhere you feel comfortable. You get to keep all the power of your extreme desktop with the portability of a laptop. These units typically start at $2000 and up.
The next option would be for some one who travels sometimes and also has the need for performance to run most applications and multitasking between various programs at the same time. These laptops usually weigh in between 6 to 8 pounds and the displays are range between 14 and 15.6 inches. Battery life for these units are usually 3 to 4 hours max, but can be upgraded to have between 5 and 6 hours for more expensive battery options. Since these are lighter units, they are more suitable for business class users who need power but also transportability. Laptops in this class can range anywhere from $800 to $2000 depending on the options you choose.
The 3rd type of laptop would be the ultra small and light net books that are available. These units typically are under 4 pounds in weight and the displays are between 7 and 10 inches. These laptops are great for someone who travels a lot and only needs minimal performance. Typically this is ideal if you only need to check your email and just browse web sites. But for many this is the perfect fit. Net books generally run for under $400.

Making the Choice of a New Laptop
Finally, you have to pick the make and model of the new laptop that meets your criteria and your budget. With so many options available, you can seriously look at doubling the sticker price by the time you add up the options. Some of these extras can include printers, docking stations, wireless or bluetooth mouse and keyboards, carry cases and a host of other internal options including RAM and Hard Disk Storage. Generally, if you are only using the laptop for web browsing and checking emails, do not get any extras, What comes in the box will be sufficient.
Comments
Hi Carcro, I run around a lot so I like my laptop lightweight. I am currently using an Asus laptop running i3 processor so it's really fast and easy to carry around. I also have a netbook but I find that the Asus performs better. I also carry an iPad around, this is great for me when I am surfing or checking my HubPages account. I guess I'm a bit of a technology freak =D
Thank you Derdriu, once again for the great comments!
Carcro: Thank you for the clear, concise, logical presentation on the necessary harmony between computer use and laptop model.
Voted up, etc.,
Derdriu
Thanks star439, you're so right, we always need something faster...Lol
Great information. There is nothing more tempting than a new computer to us folks that live, and breath the internet. God Bless You .
Thanks for commenting rai2722.
very informative hub you created here. thanks mate!
Thanks Stephanie for commenting and the Vote! Definitely so much to choose from out there, you'll get taken by the sales people if you can't speak their language, so its good to know ahead of time just what you are looking for. Macs are a great choice too!
You make some great points here that will help people narrow down their choices. I bought a new laptop a year ago, and for me, some of the criteria included long batter life, light weight, lots of storage space for my photographs. I chose to get a Macintosh iBook and really love it! But making that choice is really hard! Very useful hub! Voted up!
Your welcome JJ, let me know if you need any help, I'd be glad to assist!
Thanks for this very useful info! I'm actually looking for a new laptop for myself and to tell you the truth I don't know where to begin! Well, I have started from your Hub! Thanks a million! :)
You're not alone Dolores, shopping for a laptop or any computer can be a nightmare for most people these days. Everything keeps changing and the sales people in most cases are only after the sale, so they try to beef it up and throw fancy terms at you. It really can be a frightening experience. And once you're home, you still wonder if you made the right choice, but there's no way your going back in that store...If you have any questions about the computer, let me know, I have been working with computers in one way or another for almost 3o years.
We just went shopping for a laptop for my son. My husband and son spent a lot of time trying to decide on the best product for him. Then we had the real problem of where to get it. When we decided on a store, we were given the run around. Found the laptop we wanted, then they pulled a bait and switch. The whole ordeal took hours.
Yes, but that generation will pass, the kids of today have no fear of any buttons or gadgets, so look out. Maybe a little fear is a good thing?
And there are still plenty of them out there? even after almost 30 years.
Thanks for commenting on my hub molometer, and thanks for the vote! I am lucky as I have a good understanding of technology, but I do feel sorry for those who are lost. I wrote a couple of articles geared towards those unfortunate enough to be terrified of computers, lol.
Interesting hub carcro. I too have worked with computers since before the PC age and I still have to go through the process you describe above. The technology changes so rapidly that; what was good yesterday may not be as good today. Clear writing voted up.
Thanks Paul for reading my hub and commenting! I have worked with computers for years, but just tried to write something in layman terms for the novice user. I'm sure most hubbers already know what laptop would be their next choice...
Interesting hub. You cover the main points. I guess we have to find a balance for what we want out fo a laptop.
